Dr Alice Day is a PhD-qualified Dietitian and an accredited practicing specialist in the dietary management of inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's and Colitis), with a focus on therapeutic nutrition for gastrointestinal health, microbial balance, and mental well-being. Dr Day’s passion lies in transforming the relationship her patients have with food—guiding them to embrace food as a source of nourishment and enjoyment rather than fear.
Her therapeutic approach centers on individualised dietary strategies designed to manage gastrointestinal symptoms, restore gut function, and improve overall quality of life. Alice believes that food should be one of life’s greatest pleasures, enjoyed through informed choices, quality ingredients, home-cooked meals, and shared experiences with loved ones.
Academic & Clinical Expertise
Dr Day's academic journey includes training and clinical experience in the United Kingdom, before returning to Adelaide, where she has contributed extensively to gastroenterology and nutrition research. Alice completed her PhD in Diet and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2021, and is the diet research lead at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Basil Hetzel Institute. She holds a joint clinical-academic position as an Advanced Gastroenterology Research Dietitian and Senior Dietitian, co-leading cutting-edge clinical trials using dietary therapies for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
An Affiliate Lecturer at Adelaide University, Alice is at the forefront of advancing knowledge in IBD nutrition, microbial manipulation, and therapeutic diet interventions. Her ongoing research includes exploring the use of exclusive enteral nutrition therapy and dietary engraftment of faecal microbiota transplantation for managing chronic gastrointestinal conditions.

Gut-Brain Interaction Disorders & Functional GI Symptoms
A key area of Dr Day’s expertise is in the dietary management of functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroparesis, constipation, and dysbiosis. Alice combines dietary interventions with psychological therapies to address the gut-brain axis, improving gut motility, pain, and symptom severity. Her application of FODMAP therapy and other dietary strategies has helped countless patients regain control of their digestive health and quality of life.

Dr Day is highly skilled in the management of intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome, and nutrient malabsorption. She is experienced in using parenteral nutrition and enteral nutrition therapies to support patients with complex gastrointestinal surgeries, short bowel syndrome, fistulising disease and high-output stomas. Alice’s expertise in this area ensures that patients receive comprehensive and tailored nutritional care for their unique needs.
Liver Disease & Therapeutic Diets
Dr Day is also experienced in the dietary management of liver diseases, including Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease and cirrhosis. Her research focuses on the Mediterranean diet as therapy, supporting patients in managing liver disease and associated cardiometabolic risks.
Disordered Eating & Mental Health in GI Conditions

She works with patients struggling with food-related distress, including disordered eating behaviors stemming from trying to control gastrointestinal symptoms. Dr Day utilises mindful and intuitive eating practices, empowering individuals to overcome food fears, intrusive thoughts, and restrictive eating habits.
